How Southern Methodist University calculates GPA
Southern Methodist University calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.
The SMU grade scale — what makes it specific
A+ rule: On the SMU scale, there is no A+ — A = 4.0 is the top grade, and the scale runs down to D- at 0.7.
Failing grade: Southern Methodist University uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).
Repeated courses & grade replacement
Effective Fall 2017+, undergrads may repeat up to six SMU courses graded D+ or lower; the repeated grade (even if lower) is used for GPA (Grade Replacement Repeat). All other repeats count both grades toward GPA (Grade Average Repeat), with the courses a student may repeat set by school of record.
Academic standing
SMU cumulative GPA below 2.000 (after first enrolled term) (assessed from the student's second enrolled term at SMU, not the first)
Latin honors at graduation
Southern Methodist University awards Latin honors by rank in the graduating class, not by a fixed GPA, so the GPA that earns each honor moves from year to year.

GPA cutoffs are announced annually for each of the five undergraduate schools (Dedman, Cox, Lyle, Meadows, Simmons), pooling the prior three years' graduates in that school - not one university-wide GPA.
Academic probation and dismissal
Academic alert / academic probation / academic suspension: SMU cumulative GPA below 2.000 (after first enrolled term) (assessed from the student's second enrolled term at SMU, not the first).
Dismissal: A second academic suspension results in academic dismissal (final, no reinstatement); no separate numeric GPA given for dismissal itself.

Latin honors are not a single university-wide GPA: each of SMU's five undergraduate schools sets its own cutoff annually to match the top 5/10/15 percent of that school's graduates.
