How Empire State University, SUNY calculates GPA
Empire State University, SUNY calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.
The Empire State grade scale — what makes it specific
A+ rule: On the Empire State scale, there is no A+ — A = 4.0 is the top grade, and there is a D- at 0.67.
Failing grade: Empire State University, SUNY uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).
Repeated courses & grade replacement
A repeated course counts once: only the highest grade and its credits are used in attempted/completed credits and GPA.

Good to know
Latin honors cutoffs (3.84/3.91/3.97) are set from the 70th/80th/90th percentile of recent graduating GPAs rather than fixed numbers, and only 27 graded credits are required for eligibility — much lower than a typical residency requirement.
Sibling campuses in the same system are not a guide here. Every figure on this page was read from Empire State’s own registrar or catalog, because the campuses of this system genuinely differ — in the grading scale, in what counts when a course is repeated, and in where the honors cut-offs sit.
