How The College of New Jersey calculates GPA

The College of New Jersey calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.

The TCNJ grade scale — what makes it specific

A+ rule: On the TCNJ scale, there is no A+ — A = 4.0 is the top grade, and there is no D-.

Failing grade: The College of New Jersey uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).

Repeated courses & grade replacement

Only the highest of the attempts is calculated into the cumulative GPA; all attempts remain on the transcript.

Academic standing

Cumulative GPA below 1.75 (up to 8 course units attempted) or below 2.0 (above 8 units)

Latin honors at graduation

HonorRequirement
cum laude3.6-3.74
magna cum laude3.75-3.89
summa cum laude3.9+

Dean’s List

The College of New Jersey names students to its Dean’s List at a term GPA of 3.5 with 3 full letter-graded course units per semester.

Academic probation and dismissal

Academic intervention / probation: Cumulative GPA below 1.75 (up to 8 course units attempted) or below 2.0 (above 8 units).

Dismissal: Placed on Academic Probation for any two consecutive semesters, or three total semesters.

The minimum cumulative GPA depends on how far through the degree a student is:

Above 8 course units<2.0 = Probation

Every figure here was read from TCNJ’s own registrar or catalog. Where a rule is set by an individual college rather than the institution, the page says so instead of presenting one college’s number as everyone’s.
