How Texas Christian University calculates GPA
Texas Christian University calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.
The TCU grade scale — what makes it specific
A+ rule: On the TCU scale, there is no A+ — A = 4.0 is the top grade, and the scale runs down to D- at 0.67.
Failing grade: Texas Christian University uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).
Repeated courses & grade replacement
If a course taken at TCU is repeated at TCU, only the last (most recent) letter grade earned counts toward the GPA, though all attempts remain on the transcript.
Academic standing
Cumulative TCU GPA below 2.00 at end of any semester following the first at TCU (academic warning)
Latin honors at graduation
| Honor | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Cum Laude | 3.5+ |
| Magna Cum Laude | 3.7+ |
| Summa Cum Laude | 3.9+ |
Dean’s List
Texas Christian University names students to its Dean’s List at a term GPA of 3.6 (first-year) / 3.7 (sophomore) / 3.8 (junior/senior) with 12 hours.
Threshold varies by class standing measured in earned hours: 0-23 hrs needs 3.6, 24-53 hrs needs 3.7, 54-83 and 84+ hrs need 3.8
Academic probation and dismissal
Academic warning / suspension / dismissal: Cumulative TCU GPA below 2.00 at end of any semester following the first at TCU (academic warning).
Dismissal: A student suspended twice who fails to maintain a 2.00 cumulative GPA in a subsequent semester is subject to academic dismissal.

Good to know
Every figure here was read from TCU’s own registrar or catalog. Where a rule is set by an individual college rather than the institution, the page says so instead of presenting one college’s number as everyone’s.
