How University of Tennessee, Knoxville calculates GPA
University of Tennessee, Knoxville (Tennessee) calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course's grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.
The Tennessee grade scale — what makes it specific
A+ rule: Tennessee uses a 4.0 plus/minus scale; A+ and A are both 4.0 (A+ capped, treated as an honor). Full set down to D-=0.7, F=0.
Failing grade: University of Tennessee, Knoxville uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).
Repeated courses & grade replacement
On a repeated course, only the attempt designated by policy counts in the GPA; all attempts stay on the transcript.
Academic standing
Minimum 2.0 GPA. Semester calendar. The College of Law uses its own 4.3 numeric scale.
Good to know
Tennessee uses a standard 4.0 plus/minus scale where an A+ is awarded as an honor but still worth 4.0 (no boost). The full ladder runs down to D-. UT's Law school separately uses a 4.3 numeric scale, but undergraduate grading is the conventional 4.0-capped system.
