How University of Toledo calculates GPA
University of Toledo calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.
The Toledo grade scale — what makes it specific
A+ rule: On the Toledo scale, there is no A+ — A = 4.0 is the top grade, and the scale runs down to D- at 0.67.
Failing grade: University of Toledo uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).
Repeated courses & grade replacement
Retaking a course does not automatically replace the old grade in the GPA; the student must file an approved petition (capped at 18 total semester hours) to exclude the original grade.
Academic standing
Cumulative GPA below 2.0 with 30 or more UToledo GPA hours (below 30 hours the same shortfall is called 'Academic Alert' instead)
Latin honors at graduation
| Honor | Requirement |
|---|---|
| cum laude | 3.3 |
| magna cum laude | 3.6 |
| summa cum laude | 3.9 |
Dean’s List
University of Toledo names students to its Dean’s List at a term GPA of 3.5 with twelve or more quality hours, graded A through F.
Academic probation and dismissal
Academic warning: Cumulative GPA below 2.0 with 30 or more UToledo GPA hours (below 30 hours the same shortfall is called 'Academic Alert' instead).
Dismissal: Both the semester GPA and cumulative GPA fall below 2.0 after a semester on Academic Warning, resulting in suspension.
The minimum cumulative GPA depends on how far through the degree a student is:
| Class level | Cumulative GPA |
|---|---|
| 0-29 credits | Academic Alert if cumulative GPA < 2.0 |
| 30+ credits | Academic Warning if cumulative GPA < 2.0 |

Good to know
Repeating a course does not automatically remove the old grade from the GPA at Toledo — students must file an approved petition, capped at 18 total semester hours of exclusions, and excluded grades still count toward honors eligibility.
Every figure here was read from Toledo’s own registrar or catalog. Where a rule is set by an individual college rather than the institution, the page says so instead of presenting one college’s number as everyone’s.
