Towson GPA
How Towson University calculates GPA
Towson University calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.
The Towson grade scale — what makes it specific
A+ rule: On the Towson scale, there is no A+ — A = 4.0 is the top grade, and there is no D-.
Failing grade: Towson University uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).
Repeated courses & grade replacement
The higher of the two grades from a repeated course is used in the GPA; the lower grade stays on the transcript marked repeat-excluded.
Academic standing
cumulative GPA below 1.75 for 1-29.5 units attempted, or below 2.00 for 30+ units attempted
Latin honors at graduation
Towson University awards Latin honors by rank in the graduating class, not by a fixed GPA, so the GPA that earns each honor moves from year to year.
| Honor | Requirement |
|---|---|
| summa cum laude | top 2% |
| magna cum laude | next 3% |
| cum laude | next 5% |
GPA cutoffs implementing these percentiles are set annually per college from the prior year's graduating class, so the numeric GPA cutoff is not a single university-wide figure.
Dean’s List
Towson University names students to its Dean’s List at a term GPA of 3.50 with a minimum of 12 calculable units per term (full-time) or per academic year (part-time).
Academic probation and dismissal
Academic monitoring (Towson's name for academic probation): cumulative GPA below 1.75 for 1-29.5 units attempted, or below 2.00 for 30+ units attempted.
Dismissal: academic dismissal if good academic standing is not reached within three academic years or 24 calculable units of academic monitoring.
The minimum cumulative GPA depends on how far through the degree a student is:
| Class level | Cumulative GPA |
|---|---|
| 1-29.5 credits | 1.75 |
| 30+ credits | 2.00 |

Good to know
Latin-honors GPA cutoffs are recalculated every year, per college, from the prior year's top-10% graduating class rather than fixed numbers.
Every figure here was read from Towson’s own registrar or catalog. Where a rule is set by an individual college rather than the institution, the page says so instead of presenting one college’s number as everyone’s.
