How Tufts University calculates GPA

Tufts University calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.

The Tufts grade scale — what makes it specific

A+ rule: On the Tufts scale, there is no A+ — A = 4.0 is the top grade, and the scale runs down to D- at 0.667.

Failing grade: Tufts University uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).

Repeated courses & grade replacement

For a course originally graded D+, D, or D-, a student may repeat it and BOTH the original and repeat grades count toward the cumulative GPA (only the repeat gets credit hours). For a course passed with C- or higher that is retaken, only the first passing grade counts toward the GPA and degree credit.

Academic standing

8 or fewer credits earned and/or semester GPA below 2.0 (A&S BA/BS); 4 or fewer credit hours and/or GPA below 2.0 (Engineering BS)

Latin honors at graduation

HonorRequirement
cum laude3.50 or higher (plus 5 major credits of A/A-)
magna cum laude3.65 or higher (plus 6 major credits of A/A-)
summa cum laude3.80 or better (plus 6 major credits of A/A-)

Dean’s List

Tufts University names students to its Dean’s List at a term GPA of 3.4 (Arts & Sciences BA/BS); 3.2 (Engineering) with 12 credits, all letter-graded (A&S); 12 credits with at least 9 letter-graded (Engineering).

Differs by undergraduate school (Arts & Sciences vs. Engineering).

Academic probation and dismissal

Academic probation / required withdrawal / permanent dismissal: 8 or fewer credits earned and/or semester GPA below 2.0 (A&S BA/BS); 4 or fewer credit hours and/or GPA below 2.0 (Engineering BS).

Dismissal: Meeting probation criteria a second time leads to required withdrawal; meeting them again after return leads to permanent dismissal.

Arts & Sciences BA/BS and Engineering BS have separate (similar) thresholds; BFA program uses a different satisfactory-progress standard.

Good to know

Repeat-course rules differ by grade band: repeating a D+/D/D- keeps both grades in the GPA, but repeating a passed C- (or better) course only counts the first grade.

Every figure here was read from Tufts’s own registrar or catalog. Where a rule is set by an individual college rather than the institution, the page says so instead of presenting one college’s number as everyone’s.
