How University of Massachusetts Amherst calculates GPA
University of Massachusetts Amherst calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.
The UMass Amherst grade scale — what makes it specific
A+ rule: On the UMass Amherst scale, there is no A+ — A = 4.0 is the top grade, and there is no D- — D is the lowest passing grade.
Failing grade: University of Massachusetts Amherst uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).
Repeated courses & grade replacement
Depends on repeat code: an approved grade-substitution attempt is dropped from the GPA, but a standard repeat leaves both grades counted.
Academic standing

| magna cum laude | top 10% of graduating class |
| summa cum laude | top 5% of graduating class |

Good to know
Sibling campuses in the same system are not a guide here. Every figure on this page was read from UMass Amherst’s own registrar or catalog, because the campuses of this system genuinely differ — in the grading scale, in what counts when a course is repeated, and in where the honors cut-offs sit.
