How University of Massachusetts Boston calculates GPA
University of Massachusetts Boston calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.
The UMass Boston grade scale — what makes it specific
A+ rule: On the UMass Boston scale, there is no A+ — A = 4.0 is the top grade, and there is no D- — D is the lowest passing grade.
Failing grade: University of Massachusetts Boston uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).
Repeated courses & grade replacement
The retake grade replaces the original in the GPA, even if lower than the first attempt.
Academic standing

| magna cum laude | 3.50-3.74 |

College of Science and Mathematics; not a campus-wide policy
Academic probation and dismissal
Academic probation: cumulative GPA below 2.0 at the end of the second or any subsequent semester.
Dismissal: suspension after a probation semester when the cumulative GPA is still below 2.0 and the term GPA is not at or above 2.3; a term GPA at or above 2.3 instead continues Extended Probation.

Good to know
UMass Boston's scale keeps a D- (0.70 points), which sibling campuses UMass Amherst and UMass Lowell do not have.
Sibling campuses in the same system are not a guide here. Every figure on this page was read from UMass Boston’s own registrar or catalog, because the campuses of this system genuinely differ — in the grading scale, in what counts when a course is repeated, and in where the honors cut-offs sit.
