How University of Maryland, Baltimore County calculates GPA

University of Maryland, Baltimore County calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.

The UMBC grade scale — what makes it specific

A+ rule: UMBC's undergraduate scale carries no plus or minus grades at all: A = 4, B = 3, C = 2, D = 1 and F = 0 quality points. Plus and minus grading exists at UMBC only for graduate students in graduate courses, and even there an A+ is not assignable.

Failing grade: University of Maryland, Baltimore County uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).

Good to know

UMBC is one of the minority of large universities with no plus/minus grading for undergraduates, so there is no way to earn a 3.7 or a 3.3 in a single course — every grade is a whole number of quality points. That makes a UMBC GPA move in larger steps than at most of its peers.

This page was read from UMBC’s own catalog, which renders only in a browser; a plain fetch returns the navigation and nothing else.
