How University of Missouri-St Louis calculates GPA
University of Missouri-St Louis calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.
The UMSL grade scale — what makes it specific
A+ rule: On the UMSL scale, there is no A+ — A = 4.0 is the top grade, and the scale runs down to D- at 0.7.
Failing grade: University of Missouri-St Louis uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).
Repeated courses & grade replacement
Courses already passed with A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+ or C may not be repeated for GPA or credit purposes. Where the initial grade was C-, D+, D, D-, F or FN, Grade Modification lets the later attempt at UMSL replace it in the GPA; this is not automatic and requires paperwork. All attempts remain on the transcript.
Academic standing
Campus cumulative GPA below 2.0. Students on probation are restricted to a maximum of 12 credits the following semester and must meet with an academic advisor.
Latin honors at graduation
University of Missouri-St Louis awards Latin honors by rank in the graduating class, not by a fixed GPA, so the GPA that earns each honor moves from year to year.
| Honor | Requirement |
|---|---|
| cum laude | next top 12% |
| magna cum laude | next top 5% |
| summa cum laude | top 3% |
Ranking is per college: cutoffs are based on a five-year rolling average of all GPAs for graduates of the college in which the student's major is housed, and the resulting GPA cutoffs are posted per college in the Bulletin.
Dean’s List
University of Missouri-St Louis names students to its Dean’s List at a term GPA of 3.2 with at least nine hours of graded courses in the semester.
Sent as letters of commendation by the individual colleges (Arts and Sciences, Education, Nursing, Ed G. Smith College of Business, School of Social Work, Psychological and Brain Sciences); part-time students are recognized annually at the same 3.2 GPA.
Academic probation and dismissal
University Academic Probation: Campus cumulative GPA below 2.0. Students on probation are restricted to a maximum of 12 credits the following semester and must meet with an academic advisor..
Dismissal: Suspension if the campus cumulative GPA is still under 2.0 after serving two semesters on probation (not necessarily consecutive). A student who earns a 0.0 GPA in their first semester at UMSL is suspended immediately. Suspension bars enrollment and financial aid for at least one full academic year..

Good to know
Latin honors at UMSL are set by percentile rank within the college housing the student's major, using a five-year rolling average of that college's graduating GPAs, so the qualifying GPA changes each year and differs by college.
Every figure here was read from UMSL’s own registrar or catalog. Where a rule is set by an individual college rather than the institution, the page says so instead of presenting one college’s number as everyone’s.
