How University of North Carolina Wilmington calculates GPA
University of North Carolina Wilmington calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.
The UNC Wilmington grade scale — what makes it specific
A+ rule: On the UNC Wilmington scale, there is no A+ — A = 4.0 is the top grade, and the scale runs down to D- at 0.67.
Failing grade: University of North Carolina Wilmington uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).
Repeated courses & grade replacement
Students get up to 3 grade-forgiveness repeats (catalogs 2012-13 and later); for those repeats, the earlier grade and credit hours are excluded from the GPA, though all grades stay on the transcript.
Academic standing
cumulative GPA falls below 2.0 in a semester after being in good standing (Concerning), and remains below 2.0 the following semester (Warning)
Latin honors at graduation
| Honor | Requirement |
|---|---|
| cum laude | 3.50 |
| magna cum laude | 3.70 |
| summa cum laude | 3.90 |
Dean’s List
University of North Carolina Wilmington names students to its Dean’s List at a term GPA of 3.5 (12-14 hours) or 3.2 (15+ hours) with at least 12 graded hours; students below 12 hours are ineligible.

Academic probation and dismissal
Concerning / Warning / Appeal Required standing: cumulative GPA falls below 2.0 in a semester after being in good standing (Concerning), and remains below 2.0 the following semester (Warning).
Dismissal: if cumulative GPA is still below 2.0 after the Warning semester, student moves to Appeal Required and is not permitted to enroll without an appeal (page sourced from the College of Humanities, Social Sciences & the Arts; an identical structure also appears on the College of Science & Engineering's page, suggesting this is university-wide, but a single central registrar statement could not be confirmed).
College of Humanities, Social Sciences and the Arts; the same structure appears on the CSE college page

Good to know
Every figure here was read from UNC Wilmington’s own registrar or catalog. Where a rule is set by an individual college rather than the institution, the page says so instead of presenting one college’s number as everyone’s.
