How University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill calculates GPA

University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.

The UNC grade scale — what makes it specific

A+ rule: UNC's undergraduate scale has no A+ and no D-. A = 4.0 is the maximum and D = 1.0 is the lowest passing grade, so a UNC GPA cannot exceed 4.0. Note that UNC's transcript key lists an A+ at 4.30, which applies to some graduate and professional programmes, not to the undergraduate scale in the catalog.

Failing grade: University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).

Repeated courses & grade replacement

Work taken at other institutions is excluded: "Grades earned and semester hours attempted at other institutions are not included in the calculation of the University grade point average." UNC's catalog defers repeat handling to its registration policy.

Good to know

Two things make UNC unusual on this list. Its undergraduate scale drops both ends of the plus/minus set — no A+ above A, and no D- below D — so the ladder runs A to F in eleven steps rather than the usual twelve or thirteen. And UNC does not use Latin honors at all: it awards with distinction and with highest distinction, both on a fixed GPA, both requiring 45 hours completed at Chapel Hill.
