How Vanderbilt University calculates GPA
Vanderbilt University calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.
The Vanderbilt grade scale — what makes it specific
A+ rule: On the Vanderbilt scale, there is no A+ — A = 4.0 is the top grade, and the scale runs down to D- at 0.7.
Failing grade: Vanderbilt University uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).
Repeated courses & grade replacement
In the College of Arts and Science, most courses may be repeated for replacement credit (exceptions noted); failed courses may be repeated until passed, passed courses only once.
Academic standing
fewer than 9 credit hours or GPA below 1.500 in a semester
Latin honors at graduation
Vanderbilt University awards Latin honors by rank in the graduating class, not by a fixed GPA, so the GPA that earns each honor moves from year to year.
| Honor | Requirement |
|---|---|
| summa cum laude | top 5% of prior three years' graduating seniors |
| magna cum laude | next 8% |
| cum laude | next 12% |
GPA cutoffs implementing these percentiles are set per undergraduate school (A&S, Blair, Connected Computing, Engineering, Peabody) and updated periodically (e.g., Summa ranges 3.942-3.993 across schools for 2026-27).
Academic probation and dismissal
Academic probation: fewer than 9 credit hours or GPA below 1.500 in a semester.
Dismissal: accumulation of two probations reviewed by Administrative Committee, may result in dismissal (no separate numeric dismissal GPA found).
College of Arts and Science specific; other undergraduate schools (Engineering, Blair, Peabody) may set different thresholds.

Good to know
Latin honors cutoffs are recalculated each year, separately for each undergraduate school, from percentiles of the prior three graduating classes rather than one fixed GPA.
Every figure here was read from Vanderbilt’s own registrar or catalog. Where a rule is set by an individual college rather than the institution, the page says so instead of presenting one college’s number as everyone’s.
