How Virginia Commonwealth University calculates GPA
Virginia Commonwealth University calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.
The VCU grade scale — what makes it specific
A+ rule: On the VCU scale, there is no A+ — A = 4.0 is the top grade, and there are no plus or minus grades at all — only A, B, C, D and F.
Failing grade: Virginia Commonwealth University uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).
Repeated courses & grade replacement
A repeated course is marked with an 'E' notation and that attempt's grade and earned hours are excluded from the GPA calculation (effectively grade replacement).
Academic standing
cumulative GPA below 2.0 for two successive semesters (warning triggers after one semester below 2.0)
Latin honors at graduation
| Honor | Requirement |
|---|---|
| cum laude | 3.30-3.59 |
| magna cum laude | 3.60-3.89 |
| summa cum laude | 3.90+ |
Dean’s List
Virginia Commonwealth University names students to its Dean’s List at a term GPA of 3.5 with 12 semester credits (excluding credit/noncredit courses), with no grade below C.
administered by each college; University College and the College of Humanities and Sciences both publish the same 3.5 / 12-credit criteria, but VCU has no single university-wide page
Academic probation and dismissal
Academic warning / academic probation / academic suspension: cumulative GPA below 2.0 for two successive semesters (warning triggers after one semester below 2.0).
Dismissal: a semester GPA below 2.0 while already on academic probation leads to suspension.

Good to know
Dean's List is administered per-college rather than by a single university-wide office; the same 3.5 GPA / 12-credit threshold was independently confirmed at University College and the College of Humanities & Sciences, but no single university-wide policy page states it applies to every school.
Every figure on this page was read from VCU’s own registrar or catalog. Where a rule is set by an individual college rather than the institution, the page says so rather than presenting one college’s number as everyone’s.
