How University of Vermont calculates GPA

University of Vermont calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.

The Vermont grade scale — what makes it specific

A+ rule: On the Vermont scale, A+ is awarded but capped at 4.0, and the scale runs down to D- at 0.67.

Failing grade: University of Vermont uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).

Repeated courses & grade replacement

For standard (non-repeatable) courses, the retake grade replaces the original in the GPA; the original grade is marked 'R' on the transcript and excluded from GPA. For courses explicitly designated repeatable, both attempts count.

Academic standing

cumulative GPA below 2.0 for good standing; probation ('on trial') status determined by college/school deans rather than an automatic GPA cutoff

Latin honors at graduation

University of Vermont awards Latin honors by rank in the graduating class, not by a fixed GPA, so the GPA that earns each honor moves from year to year.

Dean’s List

Academic probation and dismissal

Good Academic Standing / Dismissal: cumulative GPA below 2.0 for good standing; probation ('on trial') status determined by college/school deans rather than an automatic GPA cutoff.

Dismissal: dismissed if grades below passing in one-half or more of semester credits in any semester.

Every figure here was read from Vermont’s own registrar or catalog. Where a rule is set by an individual college rather than the institution, the page says so instead of presenting one college’s number as everyone’s.
