How Villanova University calculates GPA
Villanova University calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.
The Villanova grade scale — what makes it specific
A+ rule: On the Villanova scale, there is no A+ — A = 4.0 is the top grade, and the scale runs down to D- at 0.67.
Failing grade: Villanova University uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).
Repeated courses & grade replacement
All attempts count. Repeated courses remain in the credit hours attempted that the GPA is divided by; the original grade is not removed.
Academic standing
cumulative or semester quality-point average below 2.00 (referred to the Academic Standing Committee, which may impose probation or dismissal)
Latin honors at graduation
| Honor | Requirement |
|---|---|
| cum laude | 3.50 |
| magna cum laude | 3.75 |
| summa cum laude | 3.90 |
Dean’s List
Villanova University names students to its Dean’s List at a term GPA of 3.5 with at least 12 credits of earned letter grades, full-time, no non-passing or missing grades.
University-wide statement in the Undergraduate Catalog; the Fitzpatrick College of Nursing restates the same 3.5 with a 12-credit full-time minimum, and the College of Professional Studies publishes its own separate Dean's List policy.
Academic probation and dismissal
Academic probation: cumulative or semester quality-point average below 2.00 (referred to the Academic Standing Committee, which may impose probation or dismissal).

Good to know
Students in business, science or engineering are judged on a second, technical-course quality-point average as well as the overall one, and falling below 2.00 on either brings them before the Academic Standing Committee.
Every figure here was read from Villanova’s own registrar or catalog. Where a rule is set by an individual college rather than the institution, the page says so instead of presenting one college’s number as everyone’s.
