How Virginia State University calculates GPA
Virginia State University calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.
The Virginia State grade scale — what makes it specific
A+ rule: On the Virginia State scale, there is no A+ — A = 4.0 is the top grade, and there are no plus or minus grades at all.
Failing grade: Virginia State University uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).
Repeated courses & grade replacement
A retake replaces the original in the GPA: when a course is repeated only the higher grade counts toward classification and the GPA.
Academic standing
Below the required semester or cumulative GPA for two completed semesters (1.5 in semesters 1-2; 2.0 semester or cumulative from semester 3 onward)
Latin honors at graduation
| Honor | Requirement |
|---|---|
| cum laude | 3.00 |
| magna cum laude | 3.50 |
| summa cum laude | 3.80 |
Academic probation and dismissal
Academic probation: Below the required semester or cumulative GPA for two completed semesters (1.5 in semesters 1-2; 2.0 semester or cumulative from semester 3 onward).
Dismissal: Academic suspension follows a third semester below the required minimum.
The minimum cumulative GPA depends on how far through the degree a student is:
| Class level | Cumulative GPA |
|---|---|
| 1 completed semester | 1.5 semester GPA |
| 2 completed semesters | 1.5 semester GPA |
| 3 or more completed semesters | 2.0 semester GPA or 2.0 cumulative GPA |

Good to know
Virginia State awards no plus or minus grades at all, and its cum laude threshold starts at 3.00 - well below the 3.50 used by most institutions.
Every figure here was read from Virginia State’s own registrar or catalog. Where a rule is set by an individual college rather than the institution, the page says so instead of presenting one college’s number as everyone’s.
