How Virginia Tech calculates GPA
Virginia Tech (Virginia) calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course's grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.
The Virginia Tech grade scale — what makes it specific
A+ rule: Virginia Tech's 'Expanded Grading System' uses a 4.0 plus/minus scale; A+ and A are both 4.0 (A+ capped). Full set down to D-=0.7, F=0.
Failing grade: Virginia Tech uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).
Repeated courses & grade replacement
A limited course-repeat/withdrawal policy applies (up to 6 hours of 'Course Withdrawn' over an undergraduate career). Confirm repeat-GPA handling with the registrar.
Academic standing
Minimum 2.0 GPA. Dean's List is a 3.4 term GPA on 12+ graded hours.

Dean’s List
Virginia Tech names students to its Dean’s List at a term GPA of 3.4 with 12 credit hours, all graded A-F.
Academic probation and dismissal
Academic warning / academic probation / academic suspension: cumulative GPA less than 2.00.
Dismissal: academic suspension unless a 2.50 term GPA is earned each Fall/Spring semester or cumulative GPA is raised to 2.00.

Virginia Tech calls its scale the 'Expanded Grading System' — it's a standard 4.0 plus/minus scale with A+ capped at 4.0 and a full set down to D-. The expanded part just means the +/- gradations; the grade-point values are conventional.
