How West Virginia University calculates GPA
West Virginia University (West Virginia) calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course's grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.
The West Virginia grade scale — what makes it specific
A+ rule: Effective Fall 2021, WVU uses a 4.0 plus/minus scale; A+ and A are both 4.0 (A+ capped), down to D-=0.7, F=0. (Courses taken before Fall 2021 used a whole-letter scale.)
Failing grade: West Virginia University uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).
Repeated courses & grade replacement
WVU has a D/F repeat policy: a qualifying retake excludes the original D/F from the GPA. The College of Law uses its own scale.
Academic standing
Minimum 2.0 GPA to graduate. Dean's List is a 3.5 term GPA on 12+ graded hours; President's List is 4.0.
Good to know
WVU switched to plus/minus grading effective Fall 2021 — before that it used whole letters only, so older transcripts mix the two. The current scale is a standard 4.0 plus/minus with A+ capped at 4.0. Course grades are weighted by the scale in effect when the course was taken, and a D/F repeat can remove the original grade from the GPA.
