How Western Washington University calculates GPA

Western Washington University calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.

The Western Washington grade scale — what makes it specific

A+ rule: On the Western Washington scale, there is no A+ — A = 4.0 is the top grade, and the scale runs down to D- at 0.7.

Failing grade: Western Washington University uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).

Repeated courses & grade replacement

The most recent grade earned on a repeated course replaces the original for GPA purposes; all attempts remain visible on the official record.

Academic standing

cumulative grade average below 2.00

Latin honors at graduation

There is no university-wide cut-off at Western Washington University — each college sets its own. WWU sets separate cum laude/magna cum laude cutoffs for each of its seven colleges for 2025-2026 (e.g. 3.81/3.93 in Business & Economics vs. 4.00/4.00 in Woodring College of Education); there is no single university-wide number, and no summa cum laude level.

Dean’s List

Western Washington University names students to its Dean’s List at a term GPA of 90th percentile or higher within the student's class level (Quarterly President's List; WWU has no separate 'Dean's List') with at least 14 credits that quarter on the A–F grading system.

Academic probation and dismissal

Academic probation: cumulative grade average below 2.00.

Dismissal: dismissal if, while on probation, quarterly GPA is below 2.00 and cumulative stays below 2.00; or, while on continuing probation, quarterly GPA is below 2.30 and cumulative stays below 2.00.

Good to know

WWU runs on the quarter system, not semesters; it has no Dean's List, instead a Quarterly President's List for the top 10% of each class with 14+ graded credits; and its Latin-honors GPA cutoffs are set separately by each of its seven colleges rather than campus-wide.

Every figure here was read from Western Washington’s own registrar or catalog. Where a rule is set by an individual college rather than the institution, the page says so instead of presenting one college’s number as everyone’s.
