How Wilmington University calculates GPA
Wilmington University calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.
The Wilmington grade scale — what makes it specific
A+ rule: On the Wilmington scale, there is no A+ — A = 4.0 is the top grade, and the scale runs down to D- at 0.67.
Failing grade: Wilmington University uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).
Repeated courses & grade replacement
Highest grade earned counts toward cumulative GPA when a course is repeated; all attempts remain on the transcript. Retakes capped at 3 (4 total attempts).
Academic standing
below 1.6 (1-30 credits), 1.8 (31-60 credits), or 2.0 (61-120 credits)
Latin honors at graduation
| Honor | Requirement |
|---|---|
| cum laude | 3.50-3.69 |
| magna cum laude | 3.70-3.84 |
| summa cum laude | 3.85-4.00 |
Dean’s List
Wilmington University names students to its Dean’s List at a term GPA of 3.5 with 9 credits per semester.
Academic probation and dismissal
Academic probation: below 1.6 (1-30 credits), 1.8 (31-60 credits), or 2.0 (61-120 credits).
Dismissal: no separate fixed GPA; dismissal/suspension follows repeated occurrences of unsatisfactory standing via Academic Review Committee, not a second GPA number.
The minimum cumulative GPA depends on how far through the degree a student is:
| Class level | Cumulative GPA |
|---|---|
| 1-30 credits | 1.6 |
| 31-60 credits | 1.8 |
| 61-120 credits | 2.0 |

Good to know
Every figure here was read from Wilmington’s own registrar or catalog. Where a rule is set by an individual college rather than the institution, the page says so instead of presenting one college’s number as everyone’s.
