How Winona State University calculates GPA
Winona State University calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.
The Winona State grade scale — what makes it specific
A+ rule: On the Winona State scale, there is no A+ — A = 4.0 is the top grade, and there are no plus or minus grades at all.
Failing grade: Winona State University uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).
Repeated courses & grade replacement
A retake replaces the original: only the last grade received counts in the GPA, even if it is lower than the first attempt or failing. A repeat must be taken for a letter grade. If the student withdraws (W) while repeating, the original grade stays in the GPA.
Academic standing
Falling below good standing places a student on Academic Warning. Good standing requires a WSU cumulative GPA of 1.75 for the first 15 degree credits attempted and 2.00 thereafter, plus completion of at least 67% of credits attempted.
Latin honors at graduation
| Honor | Requirement |
|---|---|
| cum laude | 3.600 |
| magna cum laude | 3.750 |
| summa cum laude | 3.900 |
Dean’s List
Winona State University names students to its Dean’s List at a term GPA of 3.50 with 12 credits taken for a grade at WSU in a single semester.
Fall and spring terms only. Pass/no-credit, Incomplete and In-Progress courses do not count toward the 12 credits.
Academic probation and dismissal
Academic Warning (first), then Academic Suspension; Academic Probation applies after a successful appeal: Falling below good standing places a student on Academic Warning. Good standing requires a WSU cumulative GPA of 1.75 for the first 15 degree credits attempted and 2.00 thereafter, plus completion of at least 67% of credits attempted..
Dismissal: Academic Suspension if the standards are not met by the end of the next term of enrollment; the student must sit out at least one academic term (summer does not count). Readmitted students continue on Academic Probation and must make satisfactory progress, defined as a 2.20 term GPA and 75% completion rate..
The minimum cumulative GPA depends on how far through the degree a student is:
| Class level | Cumulative GPA |
|---|---|
| first 15 degree credits attempted | 1.75 |
| 16 and above (thereafter) | 2.00 |

Good to know
Winona State grades on whole letters only — there are no plus/minus grades — and a repeated course always replaces the earlier grade in the GPA even when the new grade is lower or failing.
Every figure here was read from Winona State’s own registrar or catalog. Where a rule is set by an individual college rather than the institution, the page says so instead of presenting one college’s number as everyone’s.
