WPI does not keep a cumulative GPA

Worcester Polytechnic Institute does not maintain a cumulative grade point average for undergraduates. Its registrar states it plainly: “WPI does not maintain a Cumulative Grade Point Average for undergraduate students.”

Undergraduate courses are graded A, B or C only. There is no D and no F. Work that does not earn credit is recorded as NR — No Record — which carries no credit and does not appear on the transcript at all. A numerical equivalent (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0) is calculated only on request and is never printed.

So there is nothing here to calculate, and any “WPI GPA” a generic calculator shows you is a number you invented rather than one WPI recognises. What WPI measures instead is below.

Scale: No cumulative GPA (A / B / C / NR)Failing grade: NR - No Record, not shown on the transcriptStatus: verifiedSource: WPI Office of the Registrar.

How Worcester Polytechnic Institute calculates GPA

It does not. WPI is one of a small number of US institutions that records no cumulative grade point average for undergraduates, so there is no figure to compute or to compare.

Dean’s List

Worcester Polytechnic Institute names students to its Dean’s List at a term GPA of 4/3 units with grades of A, plus at least an additional 2/3 units with grades of B or above (no GPA is used) with 2 units of graded work per semester (Wellness/PE, Military Science and Aerospace Studies excluded).

Published twice a year, in January for A/B terms and in May for C/D terms

Academic probation and dismissal

Academic probation: No GPA threshold. A student who fails to complete at least 4/3 units of academic work in a semester is placed on Academic Warning for two terms; failing again at the next review means Academic Probation.

Dismissal: Academic Suspension if a student on Academic Probation again fails to make satisfactory academic progress at the next review; suspension bars enrollment for at least two terms.

Good to know

WPI computes no undergraduate GPA and records no D or F: work that does not earn credit is graded NR, which does not appear on the transcript at all.

If an employer, a graduate programme or a scholarship asks for a GPA, WPI cannot supply a cumulative one, and saying so is better than estimating. The registrar will issue the numerical equivalent on request, and will confirm in writing that WPI does not maintain a cumulative average — that letter is usually what an application actually wants.

Every figure here was read from WPI’s own registrar or catalog.
