How University of Wyoming calculates GPA
University of Wyoming calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.
The Wyoming grade scale — what makes it specific
A+ rule: On the Wyoming scale, there is no A+ — A = 4.0 is the top grade, and there are no plus or minus grades at all.
Failing grade: University of Wyoming uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).
Repeated courses & grade replacement
Grade replacement: on a first repeat, only the second attempt's grade/credit counts toward cumulative GPA; on further repeats, only the last attempt counts. Maximum 3 attempts per course (including withdrawals).
Academic standing
Cumulative GPA below 2.000
Latin honors at graduation
University of Wyoming awards Latin honors by rank in the graduating class, not by a fixed GPA, so the GPA that earns each honor moves from year to year.
| Honor | Requirement |
|---|---|
| cum laude | top ~10% (5th percentile band) by college, e.g. Arts & Sciences 3.947 |
| magna cum laude | next ~4-5% by college, e.g. Arts & Sciences 3.992 |
| summa cum laude | top 1% by college, generally 4.000 |
GPA cutoffs are recalculated annually per college from a rolling five-year GPA distribution (e.g. Business and Engineering have different cum laude cutoffs than Arts & Sciences); there is no single university-wide numeric cutoff.
Dean’s List
University of Wyoming names students to its Dean’s List at a term GPA of 3.25 (freshmen) or 3.4 (sophomores and above) for Dean's Honor Roll; 3.5 for Provost's Honor Roll (6-11 hours); 4.0 for President's Honor Roll with 12 UW semester hours (6-11 hours for Provost's Honor Roll).
Threshold differs by class standing and credit load (a de facto per-tier variation rather than one flat number).
Academic probation and dismissal
Academic probation / suspension: Cumulative GPA below 2.000.
Dismissal: Suspension if the student fails to clear probation or earns a semester GPA below 2.000 in the next semester/term attempted.

Good to know
Latin honors at UW are percentile-based and recalculated annually per college from a five-year rolling GPA distribution, not fixed GPA cutoffs — a student's honors level depends on their college, not a single university-wide number.
Every figure here was read from Wyoming’s own registrar or catalog. Where a rule is set by an individual college rather than the institution, the page says so instead of presenting one college’s number as everyone’s.
