Ontario Top 6 Average Calculator

Quick answer: Ontario universities average six Grade 12 4U/M marks, but each one picks the six its own way. Waterloo, Western, McMaster, Guelph and others put your program’s required courses in first and add your best remaining marks; TMU, Windsor and Lakehead take your best six whether or not the required courses are among them. Enter your marks once to see your average at all 25 universities.

Unofficial estimate. Programs can set their own required courses, minimum marks and averages, and admission is competitive; only the university can tell you your admission average.

How to use it

Enter each Grade 12 U or M course with its course code and your mark. Tick “Required” for the courses your program lists as prerequisites (check the program’s page). Leave out co-op credits. Pick a university to see which six marks it would use (they are highlighted), and read the table under the result for your average at every Ontario university.

There is no single Ontario rule

OUAC, the Ontario Universities’ Application Centre, collects your marks, but each university writes its own admission-average rule. Read strictly from their own words, they fall into these groups:

  • Required courses for your program, plus your best remaining 4U/M courses to make six: Carleton University, University of Guelph, University of Guelph-Humber, McMaster University, Nipissing University, Université de l'Ontario français, University of Ottawa, University of Waterloo, Western University, Huron University (at Western).
  • Six 4U/M courses including Grade 12 U English: OCAD University.
  • Your best six 4U/M courses, whether or not they include your program's required courses: Lakehead University, Toronto Metropolitan University, University of Windsor.
  • Best six 4U/M for most programs; some programs put their required courses in the average: Trent University, Wilfrid Laurier University, York University.
  • Six 4U/M courses; the university does not publish how it picks them: Algoma University, Brock University, Laurentian University, Ontario Tech University, Saint Paul University, Queen's University, University of Toronto, King's University College (at Western).

Where a university does not publish how it picks the six (the last group), the calculator shows your best six and, if you ticked required courses, the average with them forced in. Where only some programs put required courses in (Trent, Laurier, York), it shows both.

Frequently asked questions

Does OUAC calculate my admission average?
No. OUAC sends your Grade 12 marks to the universities; each university calculates its own admission average with its own rule, which it publishes on its OUAC guide page or its own admissions site. That is why the same marks can give different averages at different universities.
Are my prerequisite courses always in my top 6?
Not always. Waterloo, for example, says it will “always include the courses which are required for admission” and then use your highest remaining marks, while TMU says “The overall average may or may not include the prerequisite courses” and Windsor uses your top six whether or not the required courses are among them.
Do Grade 11 marks count?
In the final average, no: it uses Grade 12 U/M courses. Guelph and Guelph-Humber say that when six 4U/M grades are not available they use a combination with completed 3U/M courses, and several universities use Grade 11 marks to make early conditional offers.
What if I repeated a course?
It depends on the university. Most that say use your highest grade (Guelph, Lakehead, Nipissing, Ontario Tech, Trent, Waterloo, Western; McMaster for up to two repeats), but Queen's uses the most recent grade for all programs, and Laurier's Science and Lazaridis programs use a weighted average of the first and latest attempts on required courses.
Are averages rounded?
TMU says averages are “based on two decimal places and are not rounded up or down”, and Laurier says “we do not round up averages”. The calculator shows every average to two decimals without rounding up.
Do co-op courses count?
Several universities exclude them: Brock, Guelph, Toronto, TMU, Western, King's and others say the co-op (or its out-of-school) component does not count toward the admission average. Leave co-op credits out.
