Brazil GPA
& grading scale

Quick answer: Brazilian universities grade on a 0–10 scale (notas). The overall average (média) is a credit/hour-weighted mean; 9–10 is excellent. The pass minimum varies by institution (commonly 5.0, 6.0 or 7.0).

Conversions to a US 4.0 GPA are unofficial estimates for planning. Only a credential evaluation (WES, ECE, ICES) is authoritative for admissions.

How the Brazil grading scale works

Brazilian universities grade on a 0–10 scale (notas). The overall average (média) is a credit/hour-weighted mean; 9–10 is excellent. The pass minimum varies by institution (commonly 5.0, 6.0 or 7.0).

Grade scale

Grade / rangeMeaning (≈ US)
9.0–10.0Excelente — A (4.0)
8.0–8.9Bom — B (3.0)
7.0–7.9Bom — C (2.0)
6.0–6.9Regular — D (1.0)
Below 6.0Insuficiente — fail (0.0)

Formula

Média = sum(grade x hours) / sum(hours) on 0–10. US band rule: 9–10 -> 4.0 (A), 8–8.9 -> 3.0 (B), 7–7.9 -> 2.0 (C), 6–6.9 -> 1.0 (D), below pass -> 0.0.

Worked example

9.5 (A)x4cr + 8.2 (B)x4cr + 6.5 (D)x2cr = (16 + 12 + 2) / 10 = 3.00 on the US 4.0 scale.
