& grading scale

Quick answer: Taiwan universities grade on a 0–100 percentage scale and report a credit-weighted average; the passing minimum is generally 60. Leading universities also map percentages to a native GPA, but the percentage is the core record.

How the Taiwan grading scale works

Taiwan universities grade on a 0–100 percentage scale and report a credit-weighted average; the passing minimum is generally 60. Leading universities also map percentages to a native GPA, but the percentage is the core record.

Grade scale

Grade / rangeMeaning (≈ US)
90–100A+ (4.0, capped)
85–89A (4.0)
80–84A- (3.7)
73–79B+/B (3.0–3.3)
70–72B- (2.7)
60–69C (1.7–2.3, lowest pass)
0–59Fail (F)

Formula

Weighted average = sum(score x credits) / sum(credits). US band rule (per NTU): 85–100 -> 4.0, 80–84 -> 3.7, 77–79 -> 3.3, 73–76 -> 3.0, 60–69 -> 1.7–2.0.

Worked example

An 82% average -> 3.7 (A-); an 87% -> 4.0 (A) on the US 4.0 scale.
