UCAS Points Calculator (Tariff Points)

Quick answer: Each Level 3 qualification and grade has a fixed number of UCAS Tariff points: an A level A* is 56, A 48, B 40, C 32; a Scottish Higher A is 33; an IB Higher Level 7 is 56. Add them up for your total: AAA is 144, ABB is 128, a BTEC Extended Diploma at DDM is 128. Universities set their own entry requirements and many make offers in grades rather than points.

Unofficial. Points are copied from UCAS’s Tariff calculator data; universities decide which qualifications and points they count.

How to use it

Add one line per qualification: pick the qualification, then your grade (predicted or achieved). The subject is optional, but if you enter it the calculator can spot an AS level in a subject you also took at A level. The start buttons load a typical A level, BTEC, IB or Scottish set to edit. You get your total, and when you have more than three A levels or Highers, the total of your best three, because some universities count only those.

What UCAS says about using the Tariff

From the UCAS Tariff calculator:

  • “Universities and colleges set their own entry requirements and don’t have to accept a qualification just because it’s included in the Tariff.”
  • “They also don’t have to use the Tariff points given by UCAS. If a university feels the content of the qualification isn’t fully relevant to the course, they might count it as fewer points— but most of the time, the full points are accepted.”
  • “Tariff points only apply to Level 3/SCQF Level 6 qualifications, not Level 2 qualifications such as GCSEs.”
  • “Some limit the qualifications they accept. For example, they may only accept Tariff points from the highest scoring three A levels or Scottish Highers.”
  • “They generally only count the highest level of achievement – for example, they may not count a BTEC Award if you have the BTEC Certificate in the same subject, or an AS level if you have an A level in the same subject.”

IB Diploma: points by component

UCAS’s Tariff data has no entry for the IB Diploma as a whole and no conversion from your Diploma score out of 45. It tariffs the parts: the IBO Certificate in Higher Level (H7 56 to H1 12), Standard Level (S7 28 to S1 6), Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay (A 12 to E 4 each). For example, 3 HL at 6, 6, 5 = 48 + 48 + 40; 3 SL at 6, 5, 5 = 24 + 20 + 20; Theory of Knowledge B = 10; Extended Essay B = 10: 220 points.

Frequently asked questions

How many UCAS points is an A* at A level?
An A* is 56 points, an A 48, a B 40, a C 32, a D 24 and an E 16. So AAA is 144 points and ABB is 128.
How many UCAS points is a BTEC Extended Diploma?
From 168 points for D*D*D* to 48 for PPP; DDM is 128, the same as A level grades ABB (128). This is the Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma; UCAS notes there are many BTECs and not all include a D* grade.
How many UCAS points is the IB Diploma?
UCAS gives no points for the Diploma as a whole. It tariffs the parts: each Higher Level and Standard Level subject, Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay. For example, 3 HL at 6, 6, 5 = 48 + 48 + 40; 3 SL at 6, 5, 5 = 24 + 20 + 20; Theory of Knowledge B = 10; Extended Essay B = 10, a total of 220. Use the “IB Diploma” start button and change the grades to yours.
How many UCAS points is a Scottish Higher?
A 33, B 27, C 21, D 15. An Advanced Higher is worth A 56, B 48, C 40, D 32, the same as A level grades A to D.
Do GCSEs count for UCAS points?
No. UCAS: “Tariff points only apply to Level 3/SCQF Level 6 qualifications, not Level 2 qualifications such as GCSEs.” National 5s are not tariffed either.
Does the EPQ count?
Yes: the Extended Project is worth 28 points at A*, down to 8 at E, half an A level at the same grade. Whether a university counts it in an offer is up to the university.
Why is an AS level worth less than half an A level?
UCAS: “The AS is positioned at 40% – or as close to 40% as possible – of the A level at each grade: AS grade A aligned to A level grade B; AS grade C aligned to A level grade D; AS grade E is below A level grade E.”
