Singapore University of Social Sciences
honours classification

Quick answer: SUSS tracks progress with a 5-point GPA system and classifies degrees by cumulative GPA, but it does not publish the grade point for each letter grade, so this page gives the bands rather than a calculator. A CGPA of 4.50 or more is Honours (Highest Distinction); 4.00–4.49 is Honours (Distinction), 3.50–3.99 is Honours (Merit), 3.00–3.49 is Honours.

What SUSS publishes about its CGPA

SUSS publishes that it uses a 5-point GPA system and that pass/fail grades carry no grade point value and are left out of the CGPA. It does not publish, on any public page, the table of grade points behind each letter grade.

A course grade comes from a weighted average mark across a continuous assessment component and an examinable component, and a student must pass both components to pass the course.

A typical course is 5 credit units (cu), with 18 contact hours (up to 24 for selected courses). Full-time students complete 200 cu for a direct Honours degree; part-time students complete 130 cu for a basic degree or 170 cu with Honours.

4.00–4.49Honours (Distinction)
3.50–3.99Honours (Merit)
3.00–3.49Honours

For students graduating from the July 2024 semester onwards; SUSS publishes the same table for full-time and part-time undergraduates. For Honours (Highest Distinction), courses at all levels are counted. A CGPA below 2.00 is a Fail, and the student does not graduate. On part-time programme pages such as the BA in Sociology, students who finish the basic degree with a CGPA of 3.5 or above may be invited into the Honours programme.

Basic degree classification

Part-time students can also graduate with a basic (non-honours) degree, classified separately:

Class of awardCGPA
Pass with Merit3.20–5.00
Pass2.00–3.19
Failbelow 2.00 — the student does not graduate

Pass with Merit applies from the July 2012 graduating cohort onwards.

Pass/fail option

A student can convert the letter grade of a course to Pass or Fail; an F becomes a Fail automatically and the course must be re-sat or repeated. Pass/fail grades carry no grade point value and are left out of the CGPA. The option can be used once per course, with no grade restriction, within a stated period after results are released. The limits (all students except the School of Law):

Re-sit or repeat

A student may re-sit a course’s examination after withdrawing, if the Overall Continuous Assessment Score (OCAS) is at least 40 and the course’s mandatory requirements are met; or after failing the examination, if the Overall Examinable Score (OES) is at least 15 and the OCAS at least 40. Otherwise the whole course must be repeated.

Why there is no calculator here

SUSS publishes its classification bands, but not the grade point for each letter grade. Third-party sites fill the gap with tables that contradict each other — most copy the NUS/NTU points, while at least one gives an A as 4.5 and a D as 0.5. A course-by-course calculator would have to pick one, so this page does not offer one. If you know your CGPA from the student portal, the table above tells you your classification.

Converting to a US GPA or a percentage

SUSS publishes no conversion of a CGPA into a percentage. The site’s Singapore-to-US converter is built on the NUS/NTU grade points, which SUSS has not published as its own, so it is not applied here.
