Singapore GPA
& grading scale

Quick answer: Major Singapore universities (NUS, NTU) grade on a 5.0 grade-point scale (A+/A = 5.0); the overall result is the credit-weighted GPA (formerly CAP). D (1.0) is the minimum pass. Because it is a 5.0 scale, converting to a US GPA requires rescaling.

Conversions to a US 4.0 GPA are unofficial estimates for planning. Only a credential evaluation (WES, ECE, ICES) is authoritative for admissions.

How the Singapore grading scale works

Major Singapore universities (NUS, NTU) grade on a 5.0 grade-point scale (A+/A = 5.0); the overall result is the credit-weighted GPA (formerly CAP). D (1.0) is the minimum pass. Because it is a 5.0 scale, converting to a US GPA requires rescaling.

Grade scale

Grade / rangeMeaning (≈ US)
A+ / A5.0
A-4.5
B+ / B / B-4.0 / 3.5 / 3.0
C+ / C2.5 / 2.0
D+ / D1.5 / 1.0
F0.0

Formula

GPA = sum(grade point x units) / sum(units) on 5.0. US approximation: (native / 5.0) x 4.0, or map letters directly (A/A+ -> 4.0, A- -> 3.7 ...).

Worked example

A native 4.5/5.0 -> (4.5 / 5.0) x 4.0 = 3.6 on the US 4.0 scale.
