Formula
GPA = sum(grade point x units) / sum(units) on 5.0. To estimate a US 4.0 value, match each grade to the US letter of the same name: A/A+ → 4.0, A− → 3.7, B+ → 3.3, B → 3.0, B− → 2.7, C+ → 2.3, C → 2.0, D+ → 1.3, D → 1.0. Do not multiply by 0.8: a C (2.00), which passes at NUS and NTU, would become a US 1.6.
Worked example
A cumulative 4.50 is an A− average, so it estimates to a US 3.7 — the value the calculator above returns. Multiplying by 0.8 would give 3.6. A 4.30 is nearer 4.50 than 4.00, so it also reads as 3.7; a 4.20 reads as B+, 3.3.
