How Singapore grades convert to US GPA
NUS and NTU grade every course on a 5.0 scale and report a credit-weighted average of the grade points. NUS called this average the Cumulative Average Point (CAP) until 1 August 2023, when it was renamed Grade Point Average (GPA) with no change to how it is computed. NTU calls the cumulative figure CGPA. A CAP, a GPA and a CGPA from either university are the same kind of number.
This converter does not multiply by 0.8. The 5.0 scale is not a stretched copy of the US 4.0. A C is worth 2.00 at NUS and NTU and is a passing grade; multiplying by 0.8 turns it into a US 1.6, below a US C. Instead, each NUS/NTU grade is matched to the US letter grade of the same name, as in the table below. A cumulative GPA entered as one number is matched to the nearest grade point, so a 4.30 reads as an A− average.

The middle column is published by both universities. The right-hand column is our estimate. D is the lowest passing course grade at both, but the degree itself needs more: NTU requires a CGPA of at least 2.00 to graduate, and the lowest NUS degree classification starts at 2.00.

These are the bands for honours programmes (160 units at NUS). NTU adds Final Year Project conditions at the top in some colleges: in most College of Engineering and College of Computing and Data Science programmes, Highest Distinction also needs at least a B+ in the project, and in most College of Science programmes it needs an A−. NUS states that each programme may set additional requirements. NUS Law, Dentistry and Medicine are graded and classified under separate schemes.
The old names are not an exact match. For students admitted before AY2012/13, NUS awarded First Class Honours (4.50 and above, with at least an A− for the honours thesis), Second Upper (4.00–4.49), Second Lower (3.50–3.99) and Third Class (3.20–3.49), with a Pass from 2.00 to 3.19. The top three line up with today’s names, but Third Class began at 3.20, not 3.00 — a 3.10 is “Honours” today and would have been a Pass under the old scheme.
Which Singapore GPAs this page covers
NUS, NTU, SIT and the University of the Arts Singapore (LASALLE and NAFA) — the four use the same grade points (at SIT, for modules from AY2021), and each has its own course-by-course calculator with honours bands: NUS, NTU, SIT, UAS. SMU grades on a different, lower scale — its top award, Summa Cum Laude, starts at a cumulative GPA of 3.80 — so an SMU GPA entered here would be read as a 5.0-scale number and understated. SMU has its own calculator. Polytechnic diplomas use their own 4.0 scales — see the polytechnic calculators. SUSS publishes its honours bands but not the grade points behind each letter, so it is not covered here. SUTD matches the NUS/NTU points below A, but its A+ is worth 5.30, so an SUTD GPA near the top does not fit this converter; SUTD has its own calculator.
If a form asks for a percentage
Neither NUS’s transcript grade legend nor NTU’s undergraduate handbook gives a percentage for any grade in the current system, so there is no official way to turn a Singapore GPA into one. Multiplying by 20 is a guess, not a conversion: neither university publishes the marks behind each letter grade, and NTU notes that grades may be moderated. If a form insists, give the GPA with its scale and classification — for example, “4.32 / 5.00, Honours (Distinction)” — and attach the transcript.
US admissions and credential evaluation
US programmes set their own requirements, and some publish specific ones for Singapore degrees. Where a programme states a requirement for Singapore applicants, use that rather than any converted number. When an application requires a credential evaluation (WES, ECE, or the university’s own), that evaluation is the authoritative conversion; this page is for planning.
