Nanyang Technological University
CGPA calculator
Quick answer: NTU grades every course on a 5.0 scale (A+ and A are both 5.00) and averages the grade points weighted by AU. A CGPA of 4.50 or more is Honours (Highest Distinction); 4.00–4.49 is Honours (Distinction), 3.50–3.99 is Honours (Merit), 3.00–3.49 is Honours.
NTU CGPA calculator
How NTU calculates your CGPA
CGPA = sum of (grade point × AU) ÷ total AU attempted, over all letter-graded courses — including failed ones (F, 0.00). Pass/Fail-only courses, courses converted under the Flexible Grading Option, absences with valid reasons (LOA), exemptions (EX) and courses in progress (IP) are left out.
NTU reports a semester GPA, a Year GPA (YGPA, semesters 1 and 2 of a year, excluding Special Terms) and a Cumulative GPA (CGPA). The CGPA is on your transcript and decides your degree classification.
One hour of lecture, tutorial or seminar a week for a semester is 1 AU; three hours of laboratory or fieldwork a week is 1 AU.
Grade points
| Grade | Grade point |
|---|---|
| A+ | 5.00 |
| A | 5.00 |
| A- | 4.50 |
| B+ | 4.00 |
| B | 3.50 |
| B- | 3.00 |
| C+ | 2.50 |
| C | 2.00 |
| D+ | 1.50 |
| D | 1.00 |
| F | 0.00 |
D is the lowest passing grade; F is a fail and still counts at 0.00.
Honours classification
| CGPA | Classification |
|---|---|
| 4.50–5.00 | Honours (Highest Distinction) |
| 4.00–4.49 | Honours (Distinction) |
| 3.50–3.99 | Honours (Merit) |
| 3.00–3.49 | Honours |
| 2.00–2.99 | Pass |
A CGPA of at least 2.00 is required to graduate. The top two classes carry Final Year Project conditions in some colleges:
- College of Engineering (except Maritime Studies) and College of Computing and Data Science (except Data Science and Artificial Intelligence): Highest Distinction needs at least a B+ in the Final Year Project.
- College of Science (except Chinese Medicine): Highest Distinction needs at least an A− in the Final Year Project, and Distinction needs at least a Pass in it.
- School of Humanities and School of Social Sciences: students who opt out of the Final Year Project cannot receive Highest Distinction or Distinction.
Flexible Grading Option (FGO)
FGO lets you convert the grade of an eligible course so it leaves your CGPA: A, B, C and D grades become Pass (P), and an F becomes No Record (NR). You earn AU only for a P. The quota is up to 24 AU for full-time students on four- and five-year programmes (21 AU for part-time students and three-year programmes), with at most 12 AU from Major Core, Major Prescribed Elective and ICC courses. FGO cannot be used on Final Year Projects or professional internships and attachments, and a declaration cannot be withdrawn once submitted. Leave FGO-declared courses out of the calculator above.
Academic standing and Dean’s List
Satisfactory standing is a CGPA of at least 2.00. Falling below it for one semester means Academic Warning, for a second consecutive semester Academic Probation, and for a third Academic Termination. The Dean’s List goes each semester to the top 5% of a cohort with a GPA of at least 4.50, computed on raw grades before FGO, with at least 12 AU of letter-graded courses for full-time single-degree students.
Which handbook applies to you
These rules are from the Academic Handbook for the AY2026-27 intake. NTU tells students of earlier cohorts to use the handbook for their own intake, and MBBS and NIE students to follow their programme’s own pages. The grade points and classification bands are long-standing, but details such as the FGO quota and Dean’s List criteria can differ between cohorts.
Converting to a US GPA or a percentage
NTU publishes no percentage for any grade, so there is no official CGPA-to-percentage conversion. For a US 4.0 planning estimate, and what to write when a form insists on a percentage, see Singapore grade to US GPA.
