GPA calculator
Quick answer: NUS grades every course on a 5.0 scale (A+ and A are both 5.00) and averages the grade points weighted by units. A GPA of 4.50 or more is Honours (Highest Distinction); 4.00–4.49 is Honours (Distinction), 3.50–3.99 is Honours (Merit), 3.00–3.49 is Honours.
NUS GPA calculator
How NUS calculates your GPA
GPA = sum of (grade point × units) ÷ sum of units, over graded courses. A failed course (F, 0.00) counts. Courses with no grade point — S/U, CS/CU, audit, exempted, in progress — are left out.
NUS called this the Cumulative Average Point (CAP) until 1 August 2023, when it was renamed Grade Point Average (GPA). The computation did not change.
One unit is 2.5 hours of study and preparation a week, so a typical 4-unit course is about 10 hours a week. (Units were called modular credits, MCs, before August 2023.)
Grade points
| Grade | Grade point |
|---|---|
| A+ | 5.00 |
| A | 5.00 |
| A- | 4.50 |
| B+ | 4.00 |
| B | 3.50 |
| B- | 3.00 |
| C+ | 2.50 |
| C | 2.00 |
| D+ | 1.50 |
| D | 1.00 |
| F | 0.00 |
D is the lowest passing grade; F is a fail and still counts at 0.00.
Honours classification
| GPA | Classification |
|---|---|
| 4.50–5.00 | Honours (Highest Distinction) |
| 4.00–4.49 | Honours (Distinction) |
| 3.50–3.99 | Honours (Merit) |
| 3.00–3.49 | Honours |
| 2.00–2.99 | Pass |
For 160-unit honours programmes, students admitted from AY2012/13. Each degree programme may add requirements of its own. Three-year, 120-unit bachelor’s degrees are classified Pass with Merit (3.00 and above) or Pass (2.00–2.99).
Students admitted before AY2012/13
The older scheme used class names, and its bottom rungs are not the same as today’s:
| GPA | Classification (admitted before AY2012/13) |
|---|---|
| 4.50 and above | First Class Honours — also needs at least an A− for the honours thesis or project; otherwise Second Upper |
| 4.00–4.49 | Second Class Honours, Upper Division |
| 3.50–3.99 | Second Class Honours, Lower Division |
| 3.20–3.49 | Third Class Honours |
| 2.00–3.19 | Pass |
So a 3.10 is “Honours” under the current scheme but was a Pass under the old one. For the 120-unit degree, Pass with Merit began at 3.20 rather than 3.00.
S/U: courses that leave your GPA
Undergraduates admitted from AY2014/15 have 32 units of Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory (S/U) option; from AY2016/17 the grade-free period covers the whole first year. A course converted to S or U is not shown with its letter grade and is not counted in the GPA — leave it out of the calculator above. For students under the current rules (2021/22 onwards), S is given for a D or above and U for an F. Under the 2001/02–2020/21 rules, S needed a C or above, and D+, D and F were U. Credit towards the degree comes only with an S.
Programmes graded differently
Law, Dentistry and Medicine use their own grading and classification schemes, and this calculator does not apply to them. NUS Law, for example, still awards First, Second (Upper and Lower) and Third Class Honours on its own criteria.
Converting to a US GPA or a percentage
NUS publishes no percentage for any grade, so there is no official GPA-to-percentage conversion. For a US 4.0 planning estimate, and what to write when a form insists on a percentage, see Singapore grade to US GPA.
