A college issues your percentage from your actual CGPA, not the other way around — so reversing the formula recovers the CGPA that would produce that percentage. When both numbers appear on your grade card, always quote the official CGPA rather than this estimate.

IGNOU, Student Registration & Evaluation Division — circular to all Regional Directors, 'Sub: Grade Point Average (GPA) to Percentage Conversion (PC) … across the Programmes of the University', Ref. Resolution No. ACSC 19.6.3 of the Academic Council's Standing Committee (19th meeting, 19-06-2006); Appendix 'Conversion Formula of Grade into Percentage': 'y = −62.5 + 99.167 x − 30 x² + 3.333 x³, where x = Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA), y = Equivalent percentage …'; worked example 'CGPA = 3.66 Corresponding % = 61.99%'.

SCOPE — 5-POINT GRADING ONLY: the formula applies to programmes graded on IGNOU's five-point scale (A 5 Excellent, B 4 Very Good, C 3 Good, D 2 Average, E 1 Unsatisfactory; Common Prospectus s.1.17), e.g. B.Ed and other non-CBCS programmes. It is a cubic fitted to the University's grade-to-percentage bands (4.50+ = 80%+, 3.50–4.49 = 60–79.9%, 2.50–3.49 = 50–59.9%, 1.50–2.49 = 40–49.9%), so 2.5 → 50%, 3.5 → 60%, 4.5 → 80% and 5.0 → ~100%. The circular also gives a lookup table (Appendix) and, for B.Ed (maximum 1100 marks), marks obtained = percentage × 11. It was approved by the Academic Council Standing Committee (Res. ACSC 19.6.3, 19-06-2006). It was issued by the Registrar, Student Registration & Evaluation Division, to Regional Directors, who issue a percentage-equivalence certificate on a learner's written request. The scanned circular was read by OCR; both worked examples reproduce exactly (3.66 → 61.99%, 3.78 → 63.72%). Its circular date is not legible, but the distribution list includes the NEP Nodal Officer, so it is recent. It is hosted on IGNOU's Regional Centre Dehradun site (rcdehradun.ignou.ac.in, an official IGNOU subdomain). NOT FOR CBCS 10-POINT PROGRAMMES (BAG/BCOMG/BSCG etc.): these use the UGC table — O 10 ≥85%; A+ 9 75–<85; A 8 65–<75; B+ 7 55–<65; B 6 50–<55; C 5 40–<50; D 4 35–<40; F <35 (Programme Guide BSCM 2025, sec. 7). No CGPA→% formula was found for them, so do not apply the cubic to a 10-point CGPA.
