PharmCAS GPA Calculator

Quick answer: PharmCAS recalculates every applicant’s GPA from their transcripts on a 4.0 scale: A+ and A are both 4.0, A- is 3.7, B+ 3.3, and F, E and WF are 0. Every attempt of a repeated course counts, pass/fail and AP credit are left out, and quarter hours are multiplied by 0.667. Each course is placed by its PharmCAS course subject into one of 9 categories.

Unofficial estimate. PharmCAS calculates your GPAs itself from your verified transcripts; the figures in your verified application are the ones programs see.

How PharmCAS calculates your GPA

PharmCAS: “…each A-F or 0-100 grade you entered in the Grade field is first converted to a PharmCAS numeric grade value, then multiplied by the attempted credits. The resulting product is Quality Points. Your total Quality Points are then divided by your Attempted Credits to determine your GPA.”

“PharmCAS calculates all GPAs in semester hours. Courses that were completed in quarter hours are converted to semester hours. The conversion ratio is 1.0 quarter hour = 0.667 semester hours.” “PharmCAS does not recognize an individual school's policies for forgiveness, academic renewal, or grade replacement for repeated courses. PharmCAS will verify based on how grades for repeated courses are reported on the official transcripts. All grades earned for repeated courses are factored into your PharmCAS School GPA.”

“Non-graded credits are not included in your GPAs. Non-graded credits are earned credits for which you did not receive actual letter grades (e.g., advanced placement credits, "pass" or "satisfactory" credits, college board AP exams, courses taken as pass/fail, etc.).” And “…a grade of WF (i.e., equivalent of a withdrawn with penalty, withdrawn failing, etc.) is factored into GPA calculations as an F.”

Which GPAs PharmCAS reports

PharmCAS’s course-subject page lists the categories below but does not say which of them make up a combined science GPA, so this calculator gives the overall GPA and each category GPA and does not invent a science figure. PharmCAS also says: “All course subjects are included in an overall GPA calculation, including course subjects not listed here.”

Type the course subject that matches the course on your transcript — the box suggests PharmCAS’s own subject names. A subject PharmCAS does not list still counts in your overall GPA.

    Worked example

    PharmCAS applies one formula to every GPA. Five courses — an A in a 4-credit course, a B in 3 credits, a C in 4 credits, a D in 3 credits and an F in 3 credits — give 16 + 9 + 8 + 3 + 0 = 36 quality points over 17 attempted credits: 36 ÷ 17 = 2.12. (This is the worked example in PharmCAS’s help center; the arithmetic is the same in every Liaison service.)

    Frequently asked questions

    Does PharmCAS count repeated courses?
Yes. PharmCAS: “PharmCAS does not recognize an individual school's policies for forgiveness, academic renewal, or grade replacement for repeated courses. PharmCAS will verify based on how grades for repeated courses are reported on the official transcripts. All grades earned for repeated courses are factored into your PharmCAS School GPA.”
Do pass/fail and AP credits count in my PharmCAS GPA?
No. PharmCAS: “Non-graded credits are not included in your GPAs. Non-graded credits are earned credits for which you did not receive actual letter grades (e.g., advanced placement credits, "pass" or "satisfactory" credits, college board AP exams, courses taken as pass/fail, etc.).”
How does PharmCAS handle quarter hours?
PharmCAS: “PharmCAS calculates all GPAs in semester hours. Courses that were completed in quarter hours are converted to semester hours. The conversion ratio is 1.0 quarter hour = 0.667 semester hours.”
What is a WF worth in PharmCAS?
PharmCAS: “…a grade of WF (i.e., equivalent of a withdrawn with penalty, withdrawn failing, etc.) is factored into GPA calculations as an F.” It is worth 0.0.
Is an A+ worth more than 4.0 in PharmCAS?
No. PharmCAS’s grade value chart gives A+ and A the same value, 4.0.
Does PharmCAS publish which courses make up its science GPA?
Its course-subject page lists categories but does not say which of them form a combined science GPA, so this calculator reports each category instead of guessing.
