How the Mexico grading scale works
Mexican universities grade on a 0–10 scale; the overall average is the promedio. 9–10 is excellent. The pass minimum is 6.0 at most public universities and 7.0 at many private ones.
Grade scale
| Grade / range | Meaning (≈ US) |
|---|---|
| 9.0–10.0 | Excelente (A / 4.0) |
| 8.0–8.9 | Bien (B / 3.0) |
| 7.0–7.9 | Regular (C / 2.5) |
| 6.0–6.9 | Suficiente — pass (D / 2.0) |
| Below pass | Reprobado — fail (F / 0.0) |
Formula
Promedio = sum(grade x credits) / sum(credits) on 0–10. US band rule: 9–10 -> 4.0, 8 -> 3.0, 7 -> 2.5, 6 -> 2.0.
Worked example
10 (A)x6cr + 8 (B)x6cr + 7 (C)x3cr = (24 + 18 + 7.5) / 15 = 3.30 on the US 4.0 scale.
