How the Nepal grading scale works

Nepali universities (Tribhuvan and others) use a 4.0 letter-grade semester system; the legacy annual system reports percentage/divisions. Distinction is 80%+ and the pass mark is ~40%. Enter a course percentage to estimate the US GPA.

Grade scale

Grade / rangeMeaning (≈ US)
≥90%A+ Outstanding (A+)
80–89%A Excellent (A)
70–79%B+ Very Good (B+)
60–69%B Good (B)
50–59%C+ Satisfactory (C+)
40–49%C Pass (C)
Below 40%Fail (F)

Formula

CGPA = sum(credit x grade point) / sum(credits) on a 4.0 scale (Tribhuvan University). Percentage maps by band: 90–100 -> 4.0, 80–89 -> 3.7, 70–79 -> 3.3, 60–69 -> 3.0, 50–59 -> 2.7, 40–49 -> 2.3.

Worked example

A First Division average of 75% -> 3.3 on the US 4.0 scale; an 85% -> 3.7; a 92% -> 4.0.
